Baseball

• In 1931 Round-robin playoff among New York City’s three major league teams to raise money for unemployed, concludes with Brooklyn losing to both Giants & Yanks.

Boxing

• In 1953 Rocky Marciano TKOs home town favorite Roland LaStarza in 11 rounds at New York City’s Polo Grounds to retain his world heavyweight boxing title.

Football

• In 1930 Portsmouth beats Brooklyn in the first NFL game played under floodlights.

Hockey

• In 1927 NHL’s Toronto St Patricks become Maple Leafs.

Miscellaneous

• In 1853 the first round-the-world trip by yacht (Cornelius Vanderbilt).
