• In 1953 Rocky Marciano TKOs home town favorite Roland LaStarza in 11 at NYC’s Polo Grounds to retain his world heavyweight boxing title

Golf

• In 1995 Ryder Cup Golf, Europe wins 14½-13½; unheralded Irish rookie Philip Walton secures victory for Europe beating Jay Haas 1 up

• In 1853 first round-the-world trip by yacht (Cornelius Vanderbilt)
