Baseball

  • In 1912 Eddie Collins steals record six bases in 9-7 Athletics win over Detroit.

Boxing

  • In 1892 James Corbett KOs John Sullivan in 21 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1986 the Cleveland Browns becomes are the first team in NFL history to have a play reviewed by instant replay, Chicago 41, Browns 31.

Hockey

  • In 1988 Guy Lafleur, Tony Esposito, and Brad Park inducted in NHL Hall of Fame.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1903 the Federation of American Motorcyclists is organized in New York.

Olympics

  • In 1960 the US sweeps the medals in the men’s discus at the Rome Olympics. Al Oerter wins his second of four career discus gold ahead of fellow Americans Rink Babka and Dick Cochran.
