Baseball

  • In 1905 the Pittsburgh Pirates strand NL record 18 men on base while losing to the Reds 8-3.

Football

  • In 1946 the San Francisco 49ers play in the first AAFC game, lose to New York Yankees 21-7.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1968 at the US Open Men’s Tennis, Arthur Ashe wins first Open era US title; beats Dutchman Tom Okker 14-12, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Olympics

  • In 1960 the US 4 x 400m relay team of Jack Yerman, Earl Young, Glenn Davis, and Otis Davis run a world record 3:02.2 to win the gold medal at the Rome Olympics.
