Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1939 Yanks beat Red Sox 4-1 in 7 innings, the game was called because of lightning

Boxing

  • In 1894 employed by Thomas Edison, William K.L. Dickson films the first boxing match, an exhibition between world heavyweight champion James J. Corbett and Peter Courtney

Miscellaneous

  • In 1957 Juan Manuel Fangio confirms his F1 World Drivers Championship, finishing 2nd in the season ending Italian GP at Monza. Fangio takes record 5th title by 15 points from Stirling Moss

NFL

  • In 2002 rookie quarterback David Carr throws for 2 TDs as the Houston Texans beat Dallas Cowboys 19-10 to become only the 2nd expansion team (1961 Minnesota Vikings) to win their inaugural game

Olympics

  • In 1960 American sprinter Wilma Rudolph wins her third gold medal of the Rome Olympics anchoring the US 4 x 100m relay team. Earlier Rudolph won 100/200m double

Tennis

  • In 1915 at the Men’s US National Championship, William Johnston beats Maurice McLoughlin 1-6, 6-0, 7-5, 10-8 in first US event held at West Side Tennis Club, Forest Hills, New York
