- In 1909 Jack Johnson retains his heavyweight boxing title when he fights Al Kaufman to a no decision in 10 rounds

- In 1987 Larry Bird (Celtics), begins NBA free throw streak of 59

- In 1960 Denver Broncos beat Boston Patriots, 13-10 in the American Football League’s first game before 21,597 fans at Nickerson Field in Boston
Tennis
- In 1940 at the Women’s US National Championship, defending champion Alice Marble beats Helen Jacobs 6-2, 6-3 for her third US singles title
