December 18th 2018 is a special day for high school sports athletes as it is the earliest they can sign a letter of intent to the colleges they have chosen to continue their athletic career.
At Sentinel high school it was an exciting day as 10 of their sports athletes signed letters of intent to the colleges of their choose ranging from football to baseball to tack & field. Six of those 10 will stay in the start of Montana, two will be staying home and attending the University of Montana, two to Montana Tech, one to Montana Western, and one to Miles Community college.
One of the prep athletes staying home is the electrifying Elias Dewaters who has been a slippery offensive threat for the Spartan football program for the past three seasons. A multi sport athlete, Elias will be using his shifty moves to run the football for the Montana Grizzlies, following the foot steps of a chosen few from Sentinel. Dewaters joins an elite group that has had a chance to play football for the Grizzlies and talks about the example they set for him, “I think I learned from some the greats, they showed me that if you put the work in and have the right mind set you can get there.”
Another Sentinel athlete that signed her letter of intent is a triple threat athlete in Ashley McElmurry who is a spirited striker on the soccer pitch, a smooth guard as a basketball player, and an outstanding track athlete will taking her talents out of state to the University Nebraska. McElmurry is not the first in her family to compete at the next level as both of her parents were track athletes in college, but she is quick to point out the support her coach have given her, “He kinda had to hold my hand through the process because I didn’t what to do, having him there along my side has been very helpful.”
Four of the 10 Spartans committing to play sports at the collegiate level are Missoula Maverick baseball players who will be playing baseball at the next level. Maverick outfielder Sam Bucy will join Spartan alum Drew Leonard at the University of Sioux Falls to continue his time in the outfield. Bucy is an example of a true team player and prefers to keep the spotlight on the team itself and not on himself, Sam talks about the the most exciting part of the signing process, “I’m relieved to for it to be over and now I can focus on school.”
Today marked the start of the time period for high school athletes to sign with colleges all across the nation and the Spartans have began the process with a strong group of 10 lead the way, only time will tell who will join them in the coming months.
