The Grizzly Pool on the campus of the University of Montana was the home of 26 swimming teams from across Montana on Saturday for the 2018 Missoula Invitational Swim Meet.
Missoula began the day by honoring their seniors with a special walk for the seniors of Hellgate, Sentinel, and the Big Sky/Loyola co-op, and their parents. As soon as the action began it became apparent that Missoula Hellgate was the team beat as they dominated race after race. The swimmers moved quickly, switching from heat to heat with precision, and as the day wound down the Knights found themselves in the top spot.
On the ladies side Hellgate doubled up on their nearest competitor with 668 points, with the Sentinel swimmers taking the second spot with 331 points, and the Bozeman Hawks finalizing the top three spots with 329 points. The Missoula/Loyola girls co-op came in ninth out of 13 teams with 63 points. The final results for the boys had the Knights tipping the top spot with 476 points, the Bozeman Hawks scoring the second spot with 328 points, and the Great Falls Bison claiming the third spot with 256. The Sentinel Spartans finished in the seventh spot with 166 points, and the Big Sky/Loyola co-op finishing 10th with 79 points.
In the Women’s 200 Yard Medley Relay the Hellgate girls took the top spot with a time of 1:49.66, the Bozeman Hawks finished second with a time of 1:59.31, and the Hellgate second team took third with a time of 1:59.69. In the Women’s 200 Yard Free Style the Lady Knights took all three of the top spots with Jesse Ecklund coming in first with a time of 2:00.20, and in the Women’s 100 Yard Back Stroke Hellgate would steam past the competition with a time of a time of 55.70, seven seconds faster than Great Falls’s AJ Popp.
In boy’s competition, Helgate’s Lyndon Amon sprinted past the field in the 100 Yard Fly with a time of 53.31, nearly seconds faster than teammate Darragh Mahns who swam into the second spot. Mathew Fritz dominated the Men’s 100 Yard Back Stroke with a time of 53.62, Hellgate’s Simon McMahon and Sawyer Keyes took the second and third spots. The Knight’s Men’s 400 Yard Free Relay team out swam the the Bozeman Hawks by eight seconds with a time of 3:21.08.
The Missoula Swimmers will head to Butte next weekend before preparing for state in Great Falls February 9th and 10th.
