The Hamilton Broncs softball team made their way up from the Bitterroot Tuesday to play the Loyola Breakers in a non conference game and the Broncs stifled the Breakers to come away with a 9-7 win in seven innings.

Hamilton came out firing in the opening inning with Sophia Doyle scoring off a sac fly by Caitlin Dillon. Loyola pitcher Kayla Hickethier finished the inning with a strikeout and then continued the top of the second with a strikeout. Between the Loyola defense and Hickethier’s pitching, the Breakers held off the Broncs through the next two innings, with Hamilton’s Kelsie Meis being the only Bronc to reach, reaching off an error.

In the top of the sixth the flood gates opened and Hamilton poured on six runs to take a 7-0 lead over the Breakers. Loyola was bit by the error bug in the sixth inning, allowing four runners on base. The Breakers defense regained its strength and held the Broncs off with a couple of quick outs but the damage had already been done. Loyola rallied a run in the bottom of the sixth when Carly Tipp brought Helle Baddaruddin home off a single, but with runners at first and second the Hamilton defense clamped down to hold off a Breaker rally.

The Broncs earned two more runs in the top of the sixth and Loyola tried to match but the Bronc led was to much and with a seven run lead the game would be called in the seventh. Hamilton’s Jorden Taggart and Loyola’s Hickethier matched each other from the pitchers circle with seven strikeouts each, Hickethier getting her batters to swing for a strike on the first pitch 26 times, four more than Taggart.

The Breakers will host the Deer Lodge Lady Wardens on Thursday afternoon.
