The Missoula Mavericks played against Terre Haute Indiana Saturday in a back and forth game that resulted in a come from behind win for Terre Haute.
Things started in favor of Missoula with veteran second baseman James Martin scoring from third off a balk call in the opening frame. Four batters later with runners at second and third Brendon Hill stepped to the plate and knocked one over the second baseman’s head that scored Brendan Buchanan and Dane Fraser to give Missoula a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. The Terre Haute pitcher Kendal Riley held the Mavericks off through the next three innings, forcing the Mavs to go three up and three down in the second, third, and fourth innings.
As in the game the night before it was late inning runs that pushed Terre Haute past their opponent, with the big inning coming in the sixth. In the seventh inning the Maverick took the lead for the last time in the game, at which point Terre Haute slide their right fielder Cameron Cook to the mound, and Cook would snuff out the Mavericks bats to close out the game.
From the bump Reilly Vetos stood tall on the hill for the Mavs, not walking a single batter in the six innings he pitched, and on the 64 pitches that Vetos threw 45 were strikes. On the offensive side of the plate Missoula was led by their short stop Brendan Buchanan who went 3-5 with a pair of runs and two RBI’s, and Brendon Hill followed suite going 3-4 with four RBI’s.
The Mavericks will come back Sunday to play Rocky Mountain out of Colorado at 3:00 pm.
