The Missoula Mavericks Legion Baseball team will start the conference portion of their season on Saturday as they take to the road to play the Billings Royals. The doubleheader will kick off an eight game road swing that includes a tournament in Lewiston Idaho next weekend.
The Mavericks are 20-10 in the first half of their season with loses coming from conference opponents such as Great Falls, Helena, and Bozeman. In the first tournament of the season the Mavs would go 2-2, book ending the four day tournament with wins. Wednesday night games would prove to be difficult for Missoula out of the gate as they would go 0-3 on the mid week night.
Missoula’s Legion baseball team is lead by the heavy bat and sure glove of Nick Yovetich who is on pace to put himself in the Maverick’s record books. The left handed batter is two triples away from breaking the single season triple record of 19 with half of the season yet to be played. From the mound the Mavericks are led by the sure hands of Dylan Barkley and Ricky Stevens. Barkley is the top starting pitcher for the Mavericks who is able to get his batters to swing on first pitch for a strike at a higher rate then any other pitcher in the league. When it comes to closing out games nobody is tougher then Stevens who sits among the leagues top closing pitchers.
With the young players finding their grove and the veterans making plays at the right times the Mavericks have a good chance to make a march to a top spot at the state tournament at the end of July.
