Baseball

  • In 1911 Cy Young beats Pirates 1-0 for his final career victory, number 511.

Boxing

  • In 1927 Gene Tunney beats Jack Dempsey for the second time in 10 rounds for heavyweight boxing title; dubbed the “Long count” fight.

Football

  • In 1987 the NFL players go on strike for 24 days.

Golf

  • In 1905 at the men’s US Open Willie Anderson wins his third consecutive Open title, and his record 4th overall, 2 strokes ahead of runner-up Alex Smith.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1988 American swimmer Janet Evans sets a world record 4:03.85 to win the 400m freestyle gold medal at the Seoul Olympics; 3rd gold medal of the Games (400m I/M, 800m).
