Baseball

  • In 1919 Babe Ruth’s 29th homerun is the first of the year in Washington, also his first in every park in the league in one season.

Boxing

  • In 1950 Heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles defeats Joe Louis in 15 rounds in Yankee Stadium.

Football

  • In 1942 the New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 without converting a first down.

Golf

  • In 1930 at the 34th US Golf Amateur Championship is won by Bobby Jones.

Hockey

  • In 1972 the first game at Nassau Coliseum, Rangers beat Islanders 6-4 in an exhibition.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1921 American swimmer Johnny Weismuller sets his first of two world records in the 100m and 150yd freestyle events the A.A.U. Nationals meet in Brighton Beach, NY.
