The Big Sky Eagles will open the 2018 high school football season Thursday night as they travel to Billings to take on the West Golden Bears.
Big Sky opens its season looking to shake off the season ending playoff game against their crosstown nemesis the Sentinel Spartans in a snow packed grudge match. The Eagles lost their offensive star in Levi Janacaro to graduation along with his back up in Kadin Lahti. Janacaro ran over opposing defenses regardless of how many they stacked in the box is now wearing the maroon and silver of Montana along with Loyola’s David Koppang and Sentinel’s Nick Germer.
Losing Janacaro is a big blow to the Eagle offense but as any football fan knows, the name of the game is next man up in prep football. Youngsters like Jett Rebish will have the opportunity to step up and show coach Johnson they can carry the torch that Janacaro has passed on at the running back position. Senior quarterback Andrew Gardanier a stable full of talented wide receivers to throw to this season has the chance to give Big Sky the air attack it needs to get passed defenses like Flathead, Glacier, and Sentinel.
A hole will need to be filled on the defensive side of the ball with both middle linebackers graduating in the spring in Janacaro and Tyler Flink Flink was a spark plug that had a nose for the ball and did not back down from any head on collision. The front end of the defense will be exciting to watch with the majority returning, and the secondary will be high octane with speed on the edges for the Eagles.
With a strong look on defense and a few key offensive returns the Eagles have a good chance to make it back the Montana high school football postseason. The keys to the Eagles to make a run will be home field advantage and the receivers pulling down catches will determine how far Big Sky will go into the playoffs.
