Buzzer Beater Sends Falcons To Class B Divisional

With just a few days until the Class B Western Divisional Tournament two teams met on Monday to battle their way into the tournament with the Florence Falcons beating the Troy Trojans 45-44 in a dramatic fashion.

Needing a win to earn a trip to Ronan on Thursday the two teams came out locking it down on defense with the first quarter ending in a scratch with the game tied at nine. Troy swung the pendulum in to their favor in the second quarter by holding the Falcons scoreless while dropping 14 of their own off the hot hand of Trevor Hoagland who scored nine points in the period for the Trojans.

Having been blanked in the second quarter Florence came out with a new plan by slowing down the Trojans attack and going hard to the hoop to earn trips to the free throw line to out score Troy 15-6 in the third quarter. After putting in work to cut the Trojan lead to four points after three quarters Florence put the pedal to floor by running 18 points up on the board through seven minutes and 51 seconds of the final frame.

Pulling the game to within three with nine seconds left on the clock Florence got the ball on an inbound in front of their bench, putting the ball into JP Briney’s hands who knocked down a three pointer as the buzzer went off to tie the game, also earning a trip to the charity stripe for a chance to win the game after being fouled on the shot. Briney would knock down his free throw to send the Falcons to the Class B Boys Western Divisional Tournament where the Falcons will take on their conference rival Loyola Rams.
