The University of Montana Women’s softball team was honored by the Big Sky Conference today. Junior shortstop Delene Colburn was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for her efforts during the Grizzly Classic.
Montana would host their first home stand of the spring season as Seattle and Maine would come to town for the Classic. In her six games over the weekend she would bat .438, had 12 RBI’s, and crossed home plate herself seven times to help the Lady Griz go 5-1, 3-0 versus Seattle and 2-1 against Maine.
The weekends results added to her 31 game stats where she has nine home runs, 20 walks, and in 89 at-bats has only been struck out five times. On the spring season Colburn is fifth in the Big Sky with her batting average at .393, second on the team behind Bethany Olea who is hitting .404.
The junior’s defense gets over shadowed by her heavy bat. She is a a wall in the infield and has a cannon for an arm, she is not afraid to dig into the dirt to come with the hard hit ground balls, and is willing to take a few bumps and bruises for an out. Her play is helped Montana to the top of the Big Sky Conference with the number one field percentage at 97%.
Colburn and the Lady Griz will swing in to the conference portion of their spring season as they take on North Dakota this weekend in a three game match up. Montana and North Dakota will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 pm and then at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
