The Missoula Mavericks earned their first win at the 43rd Annual Camping World Firecracker Classic with the help of lock down pitching and stellar play at the plate.
Missoula would send one of their aces to the mound on Monday in Brendon Hill who stone walled the Volunteers in five of the seven innings he hurled the baseball at Merced. The opening frame was rough for Hill as he would walk three of the six batters in the inning and allowed a single run, from there Merced would go three up three down in the second and third innings, and the Mav defense would support Hill through the remaining innings he stood on the mound. Hill stood strong on the bump, even until the seventh when he allowed Merced to earn two runs.
From the plate the Mavs found their bats and stayed consistent throughout the game. Shortstop Brendan Buchanan led all batters going 4-4 with a run and an RBI, while the young gun Kaden Heidrick picked up where he left off in the previous game going 1-4 from the dish and earned a run and an RBI. As a team Missoula would bat .353, an improvement from the day before where the Mavs went .269 from the plate.
The Mavericks will have the early game Tuesday morning as they will face Premier West out of Colorado, first pitch is at 11:00 am from Fitzgerald Field in Rapid City South Dakota.
