As we approach the end of the Legion baseball season in Montana the Missoula Mavericks played their final road game taking on the Kalispell Lakers in a single seven inning game.
Things went the Lakers way out of the gate with the Lakers pitcher Sam Elliott and the Kalispell defense held off the Mavericks in the opening inning despite putting Brendan Buchanan on at first base. Kalispell swung back in the bottom of the first frame when Dawson Smith brought Taylor Morton home from second off a single. Elliott went on to stone wall the Mavs from the bump, not allowing a second hit by Missoula until the fourth inning when the Mavs earned their first run in the fifth inning when Kaden Heidrick crossed home plate.
From the bump for the Mavericks it was Dylan Chalmers who pitched four innings before Missoula went to the bull pen to bring in Thomas Martin. Chalmers would allow six runs off nine hits, only tow of the runs were earned, struck out two , and walked a single Laker. The younger martin came in and allowed two hits and struck out one Laker in the two inning he threw against Kalispell.
Missoula earned their first two runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull within four runs of Kalispell, and then in the seventh inning with the Mavs fans sporting rally caps Missoula started to climb back into the game. Kalispell pulled Elliot off the mound in the top of the seventh and replaced him with Johan Freudenberg, and Freudenberg would put the Lakers fans on the edges of their seats as Freudenberg put the first four batters on base, allowed the Mavs to earn three runs to pull within one run, and helped the Missoula earn a run off a balk call.
The Mavs will finish out their season with their final games being played in front of their home fans starting with the Helena Senators on Thursday night at 5:00 pm.
