The CMR Rustlers made a trip West to take on the Big Sky Eagle boys Thursday night in a Class AA basketball match up where the Eagles where able to keep pace with the Rustlers for the majority of the game, but in the end CMR came out victorious 71-64.
Right from the tip off the game was an intense sensory over load as the Eagles came out gunning with Tim Morin knocking down a pair of three pointers, with Andrew Gardenier and Camdyn LaRance followed suite with three pointers of their own in the opening quarter. LaRance and Gardenier forced the Rustlers into foul trouble by pressing the ball into the hole, each gaining multiple trips to the free throw line in the first half.
With a seven point lead to start the third quarter CMR had the ball, it was Big Sky that went back to work on the press offensively, putting the Rustlers key players on the bench in foul trouble. With CMR’s defensive play makers on the bench the Eagles went on a run to make it a one point game at the end of the third quarter, outscoring CMR 22-15 in the thrird quarter.
Down 53-52 to start the fourth quarter Gardenier and LaRance went to work for the Eagles, scoring a combined 10 of the 12 points the Eagles scored in the final quarter. Despite the efforts of Big Sky’s play makers the game came down to CMR’s ability to make their free throws, and the Rustlers sealed the win from the charity stripe going 10 for 10 in the closing minutes of the game.
