For this weeks Weekly Prep Spotlight we take a look at one of the most prestigious wrestling events in the Northwest as the Sentinel Spartans host the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic.
The tournament is hosted by Sentinel high school in memory of Jug Beck who was one of the main drivers of high school wrestling in the state of Montana. Beck began his coaching career in 1955 as the head coach of the Sentinel wrestling team where he coached the Spartans to 12 team titles and put 75 individuals on the top of the podium.
In 1995 the classic was renamed from the Rocky Mountain Classic to the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic by the coaches, giving Beck the opportunity to live on by having all team and individual awards carrying his name. The classic is well known throughout the Northwest as teams work to add it to their schedules each season as the space is limited and the line of teams wanting to attend is long.
This year there are 32 teams on the ticket for the classic from all over Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Wyoming. The two day event will begin Friday with weigh ins at 9:00 am, and the wrestlers will hit the mats at 11:00 am. Wrestling will continue through the day on Friday until the conclusion of the championship quarter finals and consultation round three, with things heating back up on Saturday morning at 9:00 am.
