The Hellgate Knights faced off against the Senior Broncs Saturday morning for a chance to play in the 2018 Boy’s Consolation game and the Broncs slipped by the Knights with a 65-61 win.
On the final day off basketball action for the season two high octane teams met on the court to battle for a chance to play for third place in the state. Senior and Hellgate came out fired up and ready to run with both teams racking up points in the paint, with the Knights out shooting the Broncs 19-15 to finish out the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Broncs settled down and began to put the ball in the paint with precision and picked up points from the bench in Sam Evenson who tallied six points from the field for Senior. Sophomore Rollie Worster tried to rally the Knights with the long ball knocking down a pair of three’s, but the Broncs took the quarter out scoring Hellgate 14-10.
With a tie ball game to start the third quarter and Senior getting the ball to start the half, the Broncs went back to their bread and butter and dropped the ball inside, this time to Slade Cobb who scored four in the paint for Senior to start the third quarter. The Broncs allowed a single jumper in the opening minutes of the second half, and held Hellgate off until 4:38 left in the third when Bridger Deden worked the ball hard to the hoop too score four in the third.
The Broncs held a narrow lead to start the final quarter and Hellgate aimed to rally early in the final frame getting contributions from Deden and Worster. Senior Knight Kade Lunday went to work scoring six points in the fourth to lead his team in the final frame, but in the end it came down to a stretch of free throws by Senior’s Connor Kiekbusch that sealed the deal for the Broncs and they moved on to play the Great Falls Bison in the consolation game later Saturday afternoon.
