Looking back on the past week in Missoula prep sports we see teams starting to find their grove as they begin to get into a rhythm on the court, on the mat, and in the pool.
Starting off in the pool we see the return of a young lady that is becoming a legend in high school swimming as Hellgate’s Katharine Berkoff swept four events in the 10 team Missoula City Meet at the Grizzly Pool. The Knights as a team would have a strong day as Hellgate would hold at least one of the top three spots in each of the events at their home meet.
On the wrestling mat two of the three MCPS schools attended the Holiday Classic in Great Falls, Big Sky and Hellgate showed strong individual efforts on the mat to accumulate a team placement of fourth out of 50 teams. The Hellgate Knights fought hard at the classic, finishing 28th after the dust settled. Sentinel wrestling made the trip over the boarder for the Tri-State Invite which found success for the Spartan wrestlers.
We come to the game that is played on the hardwood as the Hellgate Knight boys showed why they are the top team in the West with their win over Bozeman, Big Sky ran with the number one team in all of Class AA boys basketball in the CMR Rustlers, and the Sentinel boys showing they have the ability to be the top team in Western Class AA basketball. Loyola built on their perfect record early in the week, but a tough cross conference game Saturday against Hamilton gave the Rams their first loss of the season.
In girls basketball Big Sky showed they are improving steadily with consistent play , while the Hellgate girls played their most inspiring basketball in recent history against the Hawks. Sentinel girls basketball continues to thrive with a test against the East in the Great Falls Bison on Friday that provided insight into how the Lady Spartans are jelling. The Loyola Breakers are possibly the most improved team from last season so far in the young season, despite losing to Flornce on Tuesday night, Loyola bounced back with a win over Dee lodge and Hamilton to close out the week.
