There were a lot of lasts this past week in prep sports from last home events of the season to last time in front of their home crowd as a prep athlete.
Wrestling
For the three Missoula schools it was a battle for city bragging rights on the wrestling mats. Big Sky, Hellgate, and Sentinel meet on the mat Friday afternoon for the Garden City Classic that resulted in the title making a trip across town from Sentinel to the Big Sky. The Eagles would sweep Sentinel and Hellgate to be named the city champions, Sentinel swung back and took their match against the Knights. For many wrestlers between the three schools it would be the last time they will compete in front of their home fans as the teams will head to AA Seeding next weekend.
Swimming
Grizzly pool was a hot bed of action on Saturday as the Missoula high schools played host for the MCPS Invite, giving the swimmers an opportunity to perform in front of their home fans for the final time this season. Swimmers from multiple classes participated in the final swimming event for the Eagles, Knights and Spartans before they head to the state meet the second weekend of February. Hellgate boys and girls continued to show their dominance while Sentinel and Big Sky had a positive day.
Girls Basketball
With finals all of last week it was a quiet week on the basketball court for the girls. Valley Christian tipped off the week on Friday with a game at home, and then took to the road on Saturday, each game resulting in a loss. Saturday brought us a pair of doubleheaders, one having conference consequences. The Breakers schooled the Bigfork Valkyries in Bigfork to help their resume in conference play, while the Hellgate Lady Knights had a big game against Genesis Prep that completed a sweep for Hellgate.
Boys Basketball
On Friday night the Valley Christian Eagles took it to the line against the Darby Tigers to open up basketball for the week, and then made a trip north to play Hot Springs. Loyola went on a trek to Bigfork to play the Vikings in a game for the number one spot in conference play and the Rams earned their first win at the mad house since it has been renovated. Hellgate flexed their muscle on Saturday afternoon in a game that crossed state lines with an impressive win over Genesis Prep.
