Baseball

  • In 1919 Philadelphia Phillies tie MLB record of 8 steals in an inning (9th) in a 10-5 loss vs NY Giants

Boxing

  • In 1980 American boxer Larry Holmes scores a 7th round TKO of Scott LeDoux in Bloomington, Minnesota in defense of his WBC heavyweight title

Golf

  • In 1953 at the PGA Championship, Walter Burkemo wins 2 & 1 from Felize Torza in the Tuesday final. it is Burkemo’s lone major title

Miscellaneous

  • In 1928 American Edward Hamm sets then long jump world record at 25′ 11″ at Cambridge, Massachusetts

NBA

  • In 1978 the NBA approves franchise swap; Buffalo Braves owner John Y. Brown and Harry Mangurian acquire Boston Celtics, while the Celtics owner Irv Levin gets Braves. The Braves were later moved to San Diego to become the Clippers

NHL

  • In 1990 the New Jersey Devils sign star Russian defensemen Viacheslav Fetisov and Sergei Starikov to NHL contracts despite criticism they are taking North American jobs

Soccer

  • In 1974 in the FIFA World Cup Final, Olympiastadion, Munich, Germany: Striker Gerd Müller scores 43rd minute winner as West Germany beats the Netherlands 2-1

Tennis

  • In 1911 Wimbledon Women’s Tennis: Dorothea Chambers becomes first player not to concede a game in a final beating Dora Boothby 6-0, 6-0
