Baseball

  • In 1940 Commissioner Kenesaw Landis gives free agency to 91 Detroit Tigers.

Boxing

  • In 1979 Puerto Rican boxer Wilfred Benitez beats WBC welterweight champion Carlos Palomino of Mexico in a 15-round split decision in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Benitez becomes two-division champion at the age of 20.

Hockey

  • In 1927 Toronto Maple Leafs complete their first hat trick (Hap Day) vs NY Rangers.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1932 horse racing Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Arcaro wins his first race.

NBA

  • In 1964 in the 14th NBA All-Star Game, the East beats West, 111-107, the MVP is Oscar Robertson, Cincinnati Royals, PG.

NFL

  • In 1940 in the 2nd NFL All Star Game, Green Bay Packers beat NFL All-Stars, 16-7.
