Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1934 the New York Giants reward MVP pitcher Carl Hubbell with an $18,000 contract.

Boxing

  • In 1986 Tim Witherspoon beats Tony Tubbs in 15 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title.

Golf

  • In 1916 Rodman Wanamaker organizes a lunch to discuss forming a golfers association (later the PGA) at the Taplow Club, Martinique Hotel, New York City.

Hockey

  • In 1989 Al Arbour wins his 600th NHL game as coach.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1953 in the Australian Championships Women’s Tennis, in an all-American final Maureen Connolly wins 1st leg of her Grand Slam; beats Julia Sampson 6-3, 6-2.

NBA

  • In 1963 Wilt Chamberlain of the San Fransisco Warriors scores 67 points versus LA.

NFL

  • In 1960 in the 10th NFL Pro Bowl, Western Conference beats Eastern Conference, 38-21. The MVPs are Johnny Unitas, Baltimore Colts, QB, and Eugene Lipscomb, Baltimore Colts, DL.
