Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1937 Cy Young, Tris Speaker and Nap Lajorie are elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.

Boxing

  • In 1981 Muhammad Ali talks a despondent 21 year old out of committing suicide.

College Basketball

  • In  1974 Notre Dame beats UCLA, 71-70 in South Bend, Indiana to end Bruins’ NCAA-record 88-game basketball win streak.

Golf

  • In 1940 LPGA Titleholders Championship Helen Hicks wins by 1 stroke ahead of Helen Dettweiler.

Hockey

  • In 1932 Charlie Conacher becomes the first Toronto Maple Leaf to score 5 goals in a game, with the first coming at 7 seconds in to the game.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1903 a new bicycle race “Tour de France” announced.

NBA

  • In 2000 Michael Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to 6 NBA championships as a player, returns to the NBA by joining the Washington Wizards as part owner and President of Basketball Operations.

NFL

  • In 1952 NFL takes control of New York Yanks.
