Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1936 the first players elected to Baseball Hall of Fame: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson.

Boxing

  • In 1994 Frankie Randall beats Mexican boxing legend Julio César Chávez by split decision to win WBC super lightweight title at MGM Grand, Las Vegas. It’s Chavez’s 1st knockdown of career in 11th and 1st loss in 91 pro fights.

College Basketball

  • In 1982 Old Dominion ends Louisiana Tech’s women’s basketball record 54-game winning streak.

Golf

  • In 1978 Joanne Carner wins Colgate Triple Crown Match-Play Golf Championship.

Hockey

  • In 1974 in the 27th NHL All-Star Game, Western Division beats Eastern Division, 6-4. The MVP is Garry Unger, St. Louis, C.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1964 the most lopsided high-school basketball score 211-29 (Louisiana).

NBA

  • In 1980 Cleveland Cavaliers beat LA Lakers 154-153 in quadruple OT.

NFL

  • In 1974 at the NFL Draft: Ed Jones from Tennessee State first pick by Dallas Cowboys.

Olympics

  • In 1924 at the first Winter Olympics the Swiss team of Denis Vaucher (C), Alfred Aufdenblatten, Antoine Julen and Alfons Julen win the military patrol gold medal at the Chamonix Winter Olympics, it’s first version of the biathlon.
