Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1903 the first Baseball World Series game ever played, Pittsburgh Pirates beat Boston Americans 7-3 at Huntington Avenue. Jimmy Sebring hits first home run, Deacon Phillippe is winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.

Basketball

  • In 1997 Minnesota Timberwolves NBA forward Kevin Garnett, just two years out of high school, signs a record 6-year, $123 million contract extension.

Boxing

  • In 1975 “The Thrilla in Manila”; Muhammad Ali stops Joe Frazier in 14 rounds in Quezon City, the Philippines to retain his WBC/WBA heavyweight title.

Football

  • In 1922 former Chicago Staleys play their first NFL game as Chicago Bears, they beat Racine Legion 6-0 at Horlick Field, Racine, Wisconsin.

Golf

  • In 1950 at the women’s US Open Babe Zaharias ties Open scoring record, -9 291 to beat amateur Betsy Rawls by 9 strokes.

Hockey

  • In 1994 the NHL owners begin lockout of players lasting 103 days, the season is shortened to 48 games instead of 84, the players seek collective bargaining and owners a salary cap.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1661 Yachting begins in England, King Charles II beats his brother James, Duke of York racing from Greenwich to Gravesend.
