Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1923 the NY Yankees win their first World Series beating the NY Giants, 4 games to 2.

Basketball

  • In 1979 the NY Knicks retire their second number, # 10, Walt Frazier.

Football

  • In 1988 Oklahoma sets an NCAA record rushing yardage with 768 yards.

Golf

  • In 1961 at the women’s LPGA Championship Mickey Wright convincingly wins her third LPGA title by 9 strokes from Louise Suggs.

Hockey

  • In 1983 the Black Hawks and Maple Leafs combine for fastest 5 goals (84 seconds).

Miscellaneous

  • In 1964 American Don Schollander swims a world record 4:12.2 to win the 400m freestyle gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. It’s the second of Schollander’s 4 gold medals at the Games.
