Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1970 the first umpires strike in MLB history lasts one day during League Championship Series The AL and NL presidents recognize newly-formed MLB Umpires Association; negotiate labor contract.

Boxing

  • In 1951 CBS-TV airs the first coast-to-coast telecast of a prize fight, Australian light-heavyweight Dave Sands outpoints Carl ‘Bobo’ Olson in 10 rounds at Chicago Stadium.

Football

  • In 1920 the American Pro Football Association (later the NFL) plays it’s first full round of games. Dayton Triangles beat Columbus Panhandles 14-0 in first official game at Triangle Park, Dayton.

Golf

  • In 1953 at the Ryder Cup San Snead wins 6 of 7 matches to lead US to 6th consecutive Cup win, 6½-5½ over Great Britain.

Hockey

  • In 1995 in a huge 3-way hockey trade, Claude Lemieux went to Colorado Avalanche, Steve Thomas to New Jersey Devils and Wendell Clark to the New York Islanders in a swap of high profile NHL forwards.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1971 American tennis star Billie Jean King becomes the first female athlete to win $100,000 in prize money in a single year; wins the $4,000 Virginia Slams Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.
