Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1906 Chicago Cubs beat Pittsburg Pirates 4-0 to end MLB season at 116-36 with .763 winning percentage; unmatched since.

Boxing

  • In 1923 Young Stribling ostensibly beats Mike McTigue on points in Columbus, Georgia for world light-heavyweight boxing title. Referee Harry Ertle later calls fight a draw, claims coerced by promoters to award fight to Stribling; McTigue retains title.

Football

  • In 1959 future Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown makes club record 37 rushing attempts in Cleveland Browns 34-7 win at Chicago Cardinals.

Golf

  • In 1895 at the first men’s US Open Englishman Horace Rawlins wins inaugural event; beats Willie Dunn of Scotland by 2 strokes.

Hockey

  • In 1991 the Edmonton Oilers trade captain Mark Messier (on the team for all 5 Stanley Cups) to the NY Rangers in exchange for Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice & Louie DeBrusk. Messier leads Rangers to Cup two seasons later.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1959 the Netherlands equal best performance against neighbors Belgium, win 9-1 in soccer friendly at De Kuip, Rotterdam; Piet van der Kuil & Faas Wilkes score 3 apiece.
