Today In Sports History 11/1

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1916 Broadway theater owner and producer Harry H. Frazee and Hugh Ward buy MLB club the Boston Red Sox for approximately $700,000 from Joseph Lannin.

Basketball

  • In 1946 in the first Basketball Association of America game the New York Knicks beat the Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

Boxing

  • In 1922 in an all-American bout Mickey Walker upsets defending champion Jack Britton in a 15-round points decision at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Walker wins the world welterweight boxing crown.

College Football

  • In 1913 Notre Dame upsets Army, 35-13 in the colleges’ inaugural football game. Quarterback Gus Dorais goes for 14 of 17 passing with 243 yards and  2 TDs,  and receiver Knute Rockne use forward pass effectively.

Hockey

  • In 1924 the Boston Bruins officially join the NHL, becoming the first United States based team to enter the League. The Montreal Maroons also join the NHL, but only last until 1938.

NFL

  • In 1959 future Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown runs for 5 touchdowns in the Cleveland Browns 38-31 win over the Baltimore Colts at Memorial Stadium.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1884 the Gaelic Athletic Association is established in a meeting at Hayes’ Hotel, Thurles, County Tipperary. Clare teacher Michael Cusack is credited as the founder, the clubs objective to promote Irish sport and games.
