Baseball

  • In 1870 The New York Times dubs baseball “The National Game”.

College Football

  • In 1940 6th Heisman Trophy Award is given to Tom Harmon, Michigan (HB).

Hockey

  • In 1960 Gordie Howe becomes the first NHL playerer to score 1,000 points.

Golf

  • In 1966 LPGA Titleholders Championship Kathy Whitworth wins back-to-back titles by 2 shots from Judy Kimball and Mary Mills

Miscellaneous

  • In 1956 Bobby Morrow takes out the Melbourne Olympics sprint double when he wins the 200m gold medal in equal world record 20.75s; beats American team mates Andy Stanfield and Thane Baker.

NFL

  • In 1956 at the 1957 NFL season Draft Paul Hornung from the University of Notre Dame is the first pick by the Green Bay Packers.
