Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1974 Dodger Mike Marshall is the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award.

Basketball

  • In 1961 the US government issues a stamp honoring 100th birthday of James Naismith,  the inventor of the game of basketball. Naismith is actually of a Canadian background.

Boxing

  • In 1981 Larry Holmes TKOs Renaldo Snipes in the 11th round for the heavyweight boxing title.

Golf

  • In 1955 at the Ryder Cup the US wins 8-4, Chick Harbert captains the Americans to 7th consecutive event victory.

NFL

  • In 1929 Providence Steam Rollers become the first NFL team to host a game at night under floodlights, they lose 16-0 to the Chicago Cardinals at the Cycledrome in Providence, RI.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1869 the first intercollegiate soccer game, Rutgers 6, Princeton 4.

Olympics

  • In 1956 the Netherlands and Spain withdraw from Olympics in protest against Soviet actions in the Hungarian Revolution.
