Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1862 40,000 watch Union army men play baseball at Hilton Head, South Carolina.

College Football

  • In 1977 at the 7th Fiesta Bowl #8 Penn State beats #15 Arizona State 42-30.

Hockey

  • In 1956 Detroit’s future Hockey Hall of Fame right wing Gordie Howe picks up a Christmas hat-trick and 3 assists in Red Wings’ 8-1 win over NY Rangers. It’s the most points Howe scores in a single game in his entire 26-year NHL career.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1930 Mt Van Hoevenberg bobsled run at Lake Placid, NY opens. It’s the first US bobsled run open to public.

NBA

  • In 2008 Phil Jackson becomes the sixth coach in NBA history to win 1,000 games.

NFL

  • In 1971 the longest NFL game is played between the Miami Dolphins beat the Chiefs 27-24 in 82 minutes and 40 seconds.
