• In 1961 the 27th Heisman Trophy Award is given to Ernie Davis, Syracuse (HB) (1st African American to win).

• In 1981 at the men’s Senior PGA Championship Miller Barber wins his first of 5 Champions Tour major titles by 2 strokes from Arnold Palmer .

• In 1990 the NHL grants conditional membership to Tampa Bay Lightning.

• In 1955 New York psychologist Joyce Brothers wins “$64,000 Question” with topic of boxing.

NFL

• In 1992 San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice catches NFL record 101st touchdown in a 27-3 win over Miami Dolphins at Candlestick Park.
