Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1955 Brooklyn catcher Roy Campanella wins his third MVP Award.

Basketball

  • In 1961 Larry Costello scores 32 consecutive points without a miss (NBA rec).

College Football

  • In 1973 the 39th Heisman Trophy Award is given to John Cappelletti, Penn State (RB).

Hockey

  • In 1987 Flyers’ Ron Hextall becomes the first goalie to actually score a goal.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1956 the XVI Summer Olympic Games close in Melbourne, Australia to start an Olympic tradition – amidst international tensions, athletes mingle together, parade into and around MCG arena for final appearance to close the Games.

NFL

  • In 1940 National Football League Championship, Griffith Stadium, Washington, D.C. the Chicago Bears beat Washington Redskins 73-0. It’s the most one-sided victory in NFL history and the first NFL title game broadcast on national radio.
