Today In Sports History 8/20

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1915 the White Sox obtain Joe Jackson from Cleveland in exchange for Robert Roth, Larry Chappell, Ed Klepfer, and $31,500.

Boxing

  • In 1994 Vuyani Bungu, the South African junior featherweight, wins the IBF World Boxing Title.

Football

  • In 1920 the preliminary meeting is conducted in Akron, Ohio to form American Professional Football Association and elect officers, installing Jim Thorpe as the president. The APFA would later become the National Football League (NFL).

Golf

  • In 1944 at the PGA Championship Men’s, Bob Hamilton wins his only major title, 1 up in the 36-hole final over heavily favored Byron Nelson.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1888 the longest US men’s single tennis tournament match, Palmer Presbrey defeats T S Tailer, 19-21, 8-6, 6-1, 6-4, an 80 game first-round contest.

Olympics 

  • In 2004 American swimmer Michael Phelps wraps up the 100/200m butterfly double at the Athens Olympics when he wins the 100m (51.25 OR) ahead of team mate Ian Croker.
