Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1917 the Pittsburgh Pirates play their fourth straight extra inning game, Carson Bigbee sets record of 11 at-bats, Pirates lose in 22 innings to Dodgers.

Basketball

  • In 1951 Harlem Globetrotters play in Olympic Stadium, Berlin before 75,052.

Boxing

  • In 1957 Olympic heavyweight boxing champion Pete Rademacher becomes first to contest the world heavyweight championship in his first professional bout. Rademacher is knocked out by Floyd Patterson in the sixth round at Sicks’ Stadium, Seattle.

Football

  • In  1947 at the 14th NFL Chicago All-Star Game: All-Stars 16, Chicago Bears 0.

Golf

  • In 2010 at the Tradition Senior Men’s, Fred Funk wins last of three Champions Tour majors by 1 stroke from Michael Allen and Taiwan’s Lu Chien-soon.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1851 Yacht “America” wins first Royal Yacht Squadron Cup (America’s Cup).

Olympics 

  • In 2004 the rowing program at the Athens Olympics ends with the United States winning the men’s eights, and Romania taking the gold in the women’s eights.
