Baseball

  • In 1968 baseball’s Opening Day is postponed because of Martin Luther King’s assassination

Boxing

  • In 1941 Joe Louis TKOs Tony Musto in 9 rounds for heavyweight boxing title

College Basketball

  • In 2003 at the 22nd NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, Connecticut beats Tennessee 73-68. UConn guard Diana Taurasi is named Most Outstanding Player

Golf

  • In 1984 Nabisco Dinah Shore Women’s Golf, Juli Inkster wins the first of her 7 major titles in a sudden-death playoff with Pat Bradley, with a par on the 1st extra hole

  • In 1982 Tracy Caulkins, 19, wins her 36th US swimming title

  • In 1966 AFL chooses 36 year old Al Davis as commissioner
