Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1938 Boston Red Sox Jimmie Foxx is walked a record 6 consecutive times by St Louis Browns.

Basketball

  • In 1996 theChicago Bulls beat the Seattle Supersonics 4 games to 2 for the 50th NBA Championship.

Golf

  • In 1946 World War II veteran Lloyd Mangrum defeats Byron Nelson and Vic Ghezzi in 36 playoff holes to win his only major title at the US Open Men’s.

Hockey

  • In 1994 Martin Brodeur becomes first New Jersey Devil to win Calder Trophy.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1909 Jim Thorpe makes his pro baseball pitching debut for Rocky Mount (ECL) with 4-2 win. Thorpe’s pro debute causes him to forfeit his Olympic gold medals.

Olympics

  • In 1995 Salt Lake City is awarded the XIX Winter Olympics in 2002.

Soccer

  • In 2018 Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is used for the first time in the World Cup, awarding France a penalty in 2-1 win over Australia in Kazan.
