Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1846 the first officially recognized baseball game using the Cartwright Rules is played with the New York Nines defeat the Knickerbockers  23-11 in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Basketball

  • In 2000the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Indiana Pacers, 4 games to 2, Shaquille O’Neal MVP in the 54th NBA Championship.

Boxing

  • In 1936 German boxer Max Schmeling KOs up-and-coming American heavyweight boxer Joe Louis in 12 rounds at Yankee Stadium, New York.

Football

  • In 1943 the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles & Pittsburgh Steelers merge, they dissolve on Dec 5.

Golf

  • In 1954 Betty Jameson wins 6 & 5 over Louise Suggs in the final at the LPGA Western Open Women’s Golf.

Hockey

  • In 1999 the Dallas Stars edge the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in triple overtime for 4-2 series win for the Stanley Cup, Brett Hull clinches series with infamous “No Goal” ruling.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1946 the first TV sports/boxing spectacular with Joe Louis knocking out Billy Conn.

Soccer

  • In 1938 Luigi Colausig & Silvio Piola each score 2 goals as Italy beats Hungary 4-1 for the FIFA World Cup Final, Stade Olympique de Colombes, Paris, France.
