Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1908 Boston’s Cy Young has his second no-hitter, beating the New York Highlanders 8-0.

Basketball

  • In 1993 NBA Draft: Michigan center Chris Webber first pick by Orlando Magic, later traded to Golden State.

Boxing

  • In 1909 Jack Johnson fights Tony Ross to no decision in 6 for heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1934 NFL’s Portsmouth Spartans become the Detroit Lions.

Golf

  • In 1962 at the US Open Women’s, Murle Lindstrom wins her first LPGA Tour victory, two strokes ahead of runners-up Ruth Jessen and Jo Ann Prentice.

Hockey

  • In 1982 the New Jersey NHL franchise officially named Devils by fan balloting, legend of the Jersey Devil, a creature that allegedly inhabited the Pine Barrens of South Jersey.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1994 Pre-trial hearings open in LA against O.J. Simpson.

Soccer

  • In 2002 at the FIFA World Cup Final in Yokohama, Japan, Ronaldo scores twice as Brazil beats Germany, 2-0 to win record fifth title, first World Cup held in Asia.
