Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1905 Baseball Hall of Fame pitchers Rube Waddell (A’s) and Cy Young (Boston) match up in a 20-inning classic, A’s win 4-2.

Boxing

  • In 1910 in the “Fight of the Century”, Jack Johnson beats James J. Jeffries by TKO in 15 rounds in Reno, Nevada to retains Johnsons world heavyweight boxing title.

Golf

  • In 2004 at the US Open Women’s Meg Mallon shoots final round 65 (−6) to win her second US title, two strokes ahead of runner-up Annika Sörenstam of Sweden.

Miscellaneous

  • In 2009 at the Wimbledon Women’s Tennis, Serena Williams beats older sister Venus 7-6, 6-2 for her third Wimbledon singles title.

Soccer

  • In 1954 at the FIFA World Cup Final Rahn scores twice as West Germany beats Hungary, 3-2.
