Today In Sports History 8/12

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1936 after a 24 year absence a baseball demonstration game is played between two American teams at the Berlin Olympics, World Champions beat US Olympics, 6-5.

Basketball

  • In 1969 the Boston Celtics are sold for an NBA record $6 million.

Football

  • In 1950 the first international game by an NFL team is played, the New York Giants beat CFL’s Ottawa Roughriders, 20-6 at Ottawa’s Lansdowne Stadium.

Golf

  • In 2007 at the PGA Championship Tiger Woods wins his fourth PGA Championship by two shots from Woody Austin.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1879 the first National Archery Association tournament is held in Chicago.

Olympics 

  • In 2016 American star swimmer Katie Ledecky a sets world record 8:04.79 to dominate the women’s 800m field at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Her medal tally of 4 gold, 1 silver make her  the most decorated US female athlete at one Olympics.
