Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1919 Cleveland pitcher Ray Caldwell is flattened by a bolt of lightning.

Boxing

  • In 1904 James J. Jeffries TKOs Jack Munroe in the second round for the heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1960 the AFL begins placing players names on back of their jerseys.

Golf

  • In 1946 at the PGA Championship Men’s,  Ben Hogan beats Ed Oliver, 6 & 4 for first of his 9 major titles.

Hockey

  • In 1977 Canadian NHL player Tim Horton posthumously inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1895 at the US National Championship Men’s Tennis, Fred Hovey beats defending champion Robert Wrenn 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 for his lone major singles title.

Olympics 

  • In 1920 Ethelda Bleibtrey is the first US woman to win in Olympics, 100m freestyle with a record time of 1:13.6.
