Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1918 players on both sides threaten to strike the World Series unless they are guaranteed $2,500 to the winners and $1,000 each for the losers.

Basketball

  • In 1960 future Hall of Famer Jerry Lucas scores 23 points as the US wins its fifth straight men’s basketball Olympic gold medal with a 90-63 drubbing of Brazil at the Rome Games.

Boxing

  • In 1966 Muhammad Ali TKOs Karl Mildenberger in 12 rounds for heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1937 Cleveland plays the Los Angeles Rams plays in their first NFL game, lose 28-0.

Hockey

  • In 1975 Darryl Sittler is named captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Miscellaneous

  • In 1927 at the 22nd Davis Cup France beats USA in Philadelphia 3-2.

Olympics

  • In 1972 the American men’s 4 x 100m relay team of Larry Black, Robert Taylor, Gerald Tinker & Eddie Hart combine for a world record 38.19 to beat the Soviet Union for the gold medal at the Munich Olympics.
