Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1920 Babe Ruth sets then home run season record at 54.

Basketball

  • In 1988 the US retain women’s basketball title at the Seoul Olympics with a 77-70 win over Yugoslavia. Star guard Teresa Edwards top scores for the Americans with 18 points.

Boxing

  • In 1941 Joe Louis TKOs Lou Nova in six rounds for the heavyweight boxing title.

Football

  • In 1946 the Los Angeles (previously Cleveland) Rams play their first NFL game in LA.

Golf

  • In 1935 at the Ryder Cup the US wins 9-3, the first of seven consecutive wins by the Americans.

  • In 1793 tennis is first mentioned in an English sporting magazine.
