Today In Sports History 9/4

Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1916 future Baseball Hall of Fame pitchers Christy Mathewson and Mordecai Brown face each other for a final time. After 25 contests Mathewson takes a 13-12 advantage with the Reds 10-8 winners over the Cubs.

Basketball

  • In 2002 Argentina pulls off one of the biggest upsets in basketball history, beating the US 87-80 in the second round of the World Championships. It’s the first US loss in 59 games since sending NBA players to international competition in 1992.

Football

  • In 1993 Penn State University plays its first football game in the Big 10 beating Minnesota 38-20, quarterback John Sacca throws 4 touchdown passes to Bobby Engram.

Golf

  • In 1932 at the PGA Championship Men’s, Olin Dutra wins the first of 2 major titles, beating Frank Walsh, 4 & 3.

  • In 1937 15 year old cyclist Doris Kopsky becomes the first Amateur Bicycle League of America woman’s national champion in 4:22.4 in Buffalo, NY.

Olympics 

  • In 1972 the US 4 x 100m medley relay team of Mike Stamm, Tom Bruce, Mark Spitz & Jerry Heidenreich sets world record 3:48.16 time to win gold at the Munich Olympics. Mark Spitz becomes the first athlete to win 7 Olympic gold medals at a single Games.
